1.  Another Redesign?

Yeah, and this is the last one! I swear! I've color-coded the pages; blue and green for the top-level pages, for example.  I simplified the navigation and removed the Java navigation.  It was pretty to look at and rather easy to set up but a nightmare to change.  To add an author or a page was a major pain in the ass.  So as Ralph Waldo Emerson advised ("Simplify, simplify, simplify") it was back to plain links for navigation.

  2.  Why Didn't You Use CSS?

I'm an amateur webmaster and the table-based pages have worked well for me.  I used KompoZer which has a CSS creator built in but it all looks like Greek to me.  Attributes? Classes? Too much of a learning curve.

  3.  Where are the pictures?

All gone and never to return.  The Shirtless galleries have been gone for a couple years.  I took the remaining pictures, including the character pictures, down with this latest redesign.  Why?  I didn't want any issues with copyright holders (they're getting so prickly these days) and they didn't fit in with the mission of great gay fiction.  Sorry, but if you email me for this or that picture, I'll just ignore you.

  4.  Why did you rename Tim and Family Instincts?

I changed Tim's last name from McGraw to Dugan because I didn't want any potential trouble with a certain country musician.  I renamed Family Instincts to Family Fiction simply because I wanted to.

  5.  Where is The Best of Nifty?

Oh, God, long gone.  But a reader told me that when he did a Google search it pointed to Archerland.  I guess Google hasn't uploaded the newer version of Archerland yet.  In any event, you can see the Best of Nifty here.

  6.  Is Archerland anti-teen?

No, far from it -- we were teens once, believe it or not!  But it is true that Archerland does not feature teen stories.  Archerland is a site focused on adults.  There are several reasons for this:

  • By focusing on adults, Archerland fills a niche that other sites don't.
  • There must be 15 sites that feature teen or youth stories to every one focused on adults. (An exaggeration, perhaps, but not much.) Some examples: Dabeagle, awesomedude, Gay Authors, crvboy, It's Only Me From Across the Sea and, of course, Nifty.  This is understandable, in part, because most traditional publishers won't touch stories with underage characters.  We think it's awesome that authors have found outlets to express their creativity and exercise their First Amendment rights.  But Archerland is not that place.

  7. But there are teen stories on Archerland!

That's true.  John Francis' stories feature teen characters, as do Keith's writings  But they were in place at Archerland before I created the "no teen stories" rule in 2004, so their stories are "grandfathered."  My own story Pocketful of Stars is also a teen story but it is my site, after all.

  8.  How do I get my stories on Archerland?

Read the Guidelines.  Probably a good idea to read Jump the Shark, too.

  9.  Where are the postcards and the map (Contents page) from?

They are of the 1933-34 Chicago World's Fair, A Century of Progress.  They came from the internet.  As you might guess, I like art deco.

  10.  Will my story be posted on the Discover page?

I created the Discover page for:

  • New Authors
  • Inactive authors
  • Authors who publish only occasionally

We'll discuss it on an individual basis.
